June 21 - CF Total

Our 1st CrossFit Total with the
Author and Inventor of the Event
Coach Rip

The rules for the lifts will need to be simple and well understood by everybody, both the lifters and people in the position of judging them, so we’re all on the same page. The idea is that when you post a CrossFit Total, yours will be done to the same standards as everyone else’s. The lifts must be easy to judge, easy to understand, and as difficult to corrupt as possible. By starting out with a clear picture of what we want and don’t want from a CrossFit Total, many millions of hours of bitching, hard feelings, and confusion can be averted. It must be understood that good form in the lifts is inherent in the rules for testing them.

The order for performing the three lifts will be squat, press, and then deadlift. The best single attempt for each of the three lifts are added together for the CrossFit Total. There is no time limit for each lift or for the length of the session in which they are all performed, but they must all be performed during one session—i.e., you cannot leave the area to rest or perform other activities between the three lifts. Multiple progressions to the best attempt are not allowed; do not work up to your best squat, then change an item of equipment or clothing and work up to it again to try to better your first effort.

CFAI Mission Statement (from www.crossfitameliaisland.com): The mission of Crossfit Amelia Island is to provide a physical fitness facility, programming, and service that is innate and raw in a world of exercise confusion. We educate our clients giving them exercise intensity, duration, challenging formats, and perfect combinations of frequency to expand former known limits - challenging them daily. Ultimately...we enhance LIFE!

We have a few students who are developing some really cool charts, and ideas for food this week. If you have any ideas on the Paleo Challenge...please BLOG them! I am sure there will be a few unique recipes that come out of this as well. Our initial challenge doesn't have to be perfect...but we would like to develop this challenge knowing that we will have other challenges like this and refne it as we we host each one. Please post your comments, any unique recipes, and your feelings over the next 3 weeks. As they say....for each one writing their thoughts....there are probably 10 more thinking the same thing....

Murph In memory of Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, 29, of Patchogue, N.Y., who was killed in Afghanistan June 28th, 2005. This workout was one of Mike's favorites and he'd named it 'Body Armor.' From here on it will be referred to as 'Murph' in honor of the focused warrior and great American who wanted nothing more in life than to serve this great country and the beautiful people who make it what it is. First posted 18 August 2005

  • Couldn't get a corporate rate on blood work...so ya'll are on your own. I am going to personally get mine done and I would encourage you all to do the same PRIOR to the challenge.
  • You will need to get the following tests to look at: Standard work-up, LDL - particle size (small and dense is bad / large and puffy = good), C-reative protien (tells about inflamation and tendonitis), Hb1aC (better indicator of blood sugar over time).
  • Is anyone interested in coming up with a list of "can eats" and "can't eats" for our group? I would be happy to be a proof-reader if you are interested in developing a Sandbox Paleo list! :-)

Rest Day on Rest Week

Welcome Steve and Beth to CrossFit! Looking forward to seeing you in class next week.

Alright Ken...watch your head on the Kip!
Gretchen...a day at the Beach?
Greetings (From Riga) and hope you all are doing great. Gretchen and I recently had a chance to do an impromptu beach workout, albeit the sea was nowhere to be found. We stopped at a ship graveyard in the Aral Sea in Kazakhstan - crazy place as the sea has receded 120km from the original shoreline thanks to the Soviets who diverted the Syr Darya river to boost cotton production. Ships can still be found rusting on the floor of the seabed, and I was lucky enough to find a pullup bar (and we had our shirts with us as you'll note!). (Doug, "of course..you guys get 2 rounds off when you come in July for rockin' the Sandbox shirts!")
I was consistently working out until about February, then my travel schedule squashed everything. I don't think I need to substitute the term 'Crossfat' for Crossfit just yet, but much looking forward to whipping myself back into shape.
We continue to follow your updates on the blog.
Best,
Ken
