Roy and Andre! Thank you for checking/trying to check the guy out. I really hope no one is training him!! 1. Shallow Depth 2. A Band for charting depth? Really? What happens if he losses control and steps back a few steps. 3. Glass - literally 2-3 feet in front?? What 4. Backing into rack to finish set 5. No shoes - wrong 6. I haven't even gone into form and technique yet...that may be another post!!
Watching that video was kinda, um, scary, but I did have to laugh at the dumbbells tied onto the bar. That was ridiculous!
Doug, why is being barefoot bad? I know I, for one, have taken off my running shoes while lifting during class. Or worn five fingers, so how is that different? Or is it a "lesser of two evils" thing, where being shoeless is more stable than wearing running shoes, but still not ideal?
OK...so Dawn is my posting friend...but I promise I didn't put her up to this!!! Apologize ahead of time for the length! :-)
Here is a (long..) but great article from Bud C. on the subject: http://www.dynamic-eleiko.com/sportivny/library/farticles015.html
One short answer is: Running/CrossTrainers - allow too much 'squish' and have zero stability within the start of the kinematic chain which initiates movement at the foundation (ground attaching to shoe) If the foot is wobbling...the knee is going to wobble and if the knee is wobbling...the hips are going to wobble. Result...INJURY or missed lift (may be one in the same!)
In a weightlifting shoe....With the foot (ankle) in the extended position at the bottom of the squat - knee and hip stability become more secure. In my humble opinion...anyone who does CF obviously cares a great deal about their body and how it operates (especially under load)...both now...and later in life. Again...in my opinion...the mere $200 it costs for shoes....compared to potential knee and hip issues later on...well - I just have a tough time with the logic. I realize money is tight...and this isn't easy.
Dawn - I am NOT trying to beat YOU up. I have been asked the same question by many; so I know there are going to be quite a few reading this...potentially with follow up questions. Riding boots = horses Steel toe work boots = dangerous work Soccer shoes - soccer Weightlifting shoes - provide a proper position to lift. Equipment and tools for exercise.
I agree with your thinking: Athletic "Power" Performance can be done in Crosstraining shoe - such as Power Cleans and Squats...but the majority of their work is going to be done with change of direction, quickness, agility, etc... Barefeet or Sockfeet: getting feet, knees and hips more stable...for sure. But still NOT in an ideal position for Deads, Cleans, Snatch, Squat, Pulls, and Presses. Obvious danger in a weightroom... :-) 5-Fingers, Chuck T's, Sketchers, some Court shoes - better still - due to flat sole and not much squishy cushion....

I'll take the obvious - dumbbells tied to the bar because he ran out of plates.
